5. Lagoa do Congro
(Congro Lagoon)
Lagoa do Congro (Congro Lagoon) is a hidden gem on São Miguel Island. This lagoon is located in the central area of the island, at the same altitude as Lagoa do Fogo, but further to the east. It lies within a volcanic crater, surrounded by lush vegetation. Its crystal-clear green waters are circular in shape, with almost 500 meters in diameter and can reach depths of up to 16 meters in some areas.
The lagoon is renowned for being one of the most beautiful spots in the Azores. What truly makes Lagoa do Congro a treasure is its preservation; it's not easily accessible, making it off the beaten path of the traditional tourist circuit. To reach it, you have to follow a dirt trail of about 2.5 km. This trail isn't easily visible from the parking lot, which deters most people. If you decide to venture there, you'll enjoy the lagoon in silence and experience a true connection with nature. Doesn't that sound like a great reward?
But its uniqueness isn't limited to its remote location or its crystal-clear waters; its formation is also quite remarkable: it was formed after a volcanic eruption and is part of the volcanic massif of Achada das Furnas.
