10. Aqueduct and the Muro das Nove Janelas
The Aqueduct and the Muro das Nove Janelas are two impressive structures considered historical heritage of São Miguel Island.
The São Miguel Aqueduct is an impressive engineering feat from the 17th century, seamlessly blending into the island's landscape. Its original function was to transport water from the interior springs of the island to the city of Ponta Delgada for use in drinking water supply and agriculture.
On the other hand, the Muro das Nove Janelas is an ancient stone structure built in the 19th century, initially used as a loading and unloading warehouse for local maritime trade and later as a distillery. Nowadays, both monuments are very popular tourist attractions and are a must-visit if you're exploring the Serra Devassa.
To reach both places, we recommend parking directly at the Mata do Canario parking lot and walking a bit, as they are very close by.
