7. Santa Bárbara Beach
Santa Bárbara Beach is a vast beach of volcanic sand that stretches along the north coast of São Miguel Island, with a length of 1.2 km. It belongs to the town of Ribeira Grande and is considered one of the most beautiful beaches on the island.
This beach, named after the nearby hermitage of Santa Bárbara, is one of the most famous on the island, known for its stunning sunsets and relaxed atmosphere. Additionally, it's a paradise for surf lovers and other water sports enthusiasts. Its waves and strong winds in the area are renowned worldwide among lovers of these sports, and you'll likely find several people practicing them if the weather permits. In fact, there's a surf school right on the beach.
If you're up for trying this sport in São Miguel, a good option is booking this 2-hour Surf Class, suitable for both beginners and experienced individuals. (For beginners, classes could also be held at Praia das Milícias).
If you just want to enjoy the beach atmosphere and its spectacular scenery, sit on the sand and relax. Even during peak season, there will be plenty of space as we're talking about one of the largest beaches in São Miguel. If you can enjoy this moment during sunset, you won't regret it. The mix of colors is truly magical.
During the summer months, if the weather is good, the beach tends to be quite crowded, with people on the sand enjoying the sun. Despite being in the Atlantic, the water temperature isn't very cold, so swimming isn't a problem. Just be careful. The currents can be quite strong. Make sure to check the current recommendations before entering the water.
On the beach, you'll find a bar where you can have a drink or grab a bite to eat, called TukáTulá. For us, it's a great option for a casual meal; the food is really good, and the prices are reasonable for its location. It's also a great spot to enjoy a cocktail while watching the sunset.
Getting to Santa Bárbara Beach is very simple. You can walk from Ribeira Grande or drive there, parking at this parking lot.
